Classic Shakshuka Recipe

Classic Shakshuka Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon kashmiri chili
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 4-6 large eggs
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Crusty bread or pita, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Sauté the Vegetables: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell peppers. Cook until the vegetables are soft, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add Garlic and Spices: Stir in the minced garlic, ground cumin, kashmiri chili, coriander, and red pepper flakes. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until the spices are fragrant.
  3. Add Tomatoes: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium-low, and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
  4. Create Wells for Eggs: Using a spoon, make small wells in the sauce for the eggs. Carefully crack an egg into each well. Season the eggs with a little salt and pepper.
  5. Cook the Eggs: Cover the skillet and cook until the eggs are set to your desired doneness. For runny yolks, this will take about 5-7 minutes. For firmer yolks, cook a few minutes longer.
  6. Add Cheese and Garnish: Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese over the top of the shakshuka. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro or parsley.
  7. Serve: Serve the shakshuka hot, straight from the skillet, with crusty bread or pita for dipping.

    Tips:

    • Adjust the Spice Level: If you like your shakshuka spicier, add more red pepper flakes or a chopped jalapeño with the bell peppers.
    • Add More Veggies: Feel free to add other vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or mushrooms.
    • Make It Your Own: Top with additional toppings like olives, avocado slices, or a dollop of Greek yogurt.

Enjoy your delicious, hearty shakshuka, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner!
